Since 2015, Industrial Design faculty have been working with partners to explore the theme of nuclear threat reduction. This work has taken place in three studio courses all of which have been sponsored by N Square. Launched in 2014 by a collaborative of leading funders, N Square helps facilitate the introduction, initiation, and integration of new ideas and new resources into the nuclear field. Partners and guests have included members from the National Nuclear Security Administration, West Point, the Nuclear Threat Initiative and various think tanks. Outcomes from these courses have been featured and shared at the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Tribeca Film Fest and the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna, Austria.
N Square Innovation Summit at RISD, November 13th-15th, 2018
In November 2018, over 65 guests from the world of nuclear security, technology, culture and design convened for a three day event on the RISD campus. Activities included lectures, studio visits and workshops facilitated by RISD faculty and staff. Participants from this event celebrated the completion of projects exploring nuclear threat reduction and the launch of four new teams exploring a new set of related challenges. These teams included members of the RISD community with student members embedded within them. This event has begun to pave the way for new partnerships and projects related to the theme of risk and existential threats.
In 2018 RISD was awarded a grant from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation in support of a fellowship program focused on global security issues. Charlotte McCurdy MID18 and Cole Jorissen ID18 were selected for this initiative. They are currently working with prompts provided by the US State Department and the National Labs. Fellows will share the outcomes of their work in the fall of 2019.
