Helpful Pre-award Proposal Info

Below is some information you may need when applying for a grant though RISD. Please make sure to coordinate with the Research Office on all submissions.

Weeks by Semester/term:

Fall semester 2016: 14 weeks & 2 days (9/8/16-12/16/16)

Winter semester 2017: 5 weeks (1/4/17-2/7/17)

Spring semester 2017: 14 weeks & 2 days (2/16/17-5/26/17)

Summer 2017: 13 weeks & 1 day (6/1/17-8/31/17)

 

RISD Internal Fringe Rates:

FT Faculty: 33%

PT Faculty: 15%

Undergrad and Graduate Students: 7.65% summer months only (enrolled students are exempt)

 

Federal Negotiated Fringe Rates (Effective 7/01/2016- 6/30/2020):

All Employees: 27.3%

Grad Student: 7.65% summer months only (enrolled students are exempt)

 

Federally Negotiated Overhead/Indirect Rate (Effective 7/01/2016- 6/30/2020)

On campus: 48.9% (unless otherwise specified by the grant)

Off campus: 22.7%

 

Undergrad and grad student hourly (going) rates:

Undergrads: $9.60-$9.90/hr.  $9.90/hr for a Research Assistant position

Grads: $20-$25/hr

 

How to calculate faculty salary:

  • Divide total salary amount by length of appointment, ie 9 or 12 months. Multiply by number of months allowed under grant.
  • NSF allows 2 months salary, ex. 60,000 (total salary), divided by 9 = $6,667. $6,667 x 2 =$13,333
  • How to calculate effort using TU’s: 1 TU= 16.6% effort or 1.5 calendar months
