How To Apply For A Grant

PRE-AWARD GRANTS CHECKLIST

RISD Research requires 10 business days to review final materials

Project Lead or PI is responsible for:

  • Meeting with Director of External Grants (DEG) 10 weeks before due date for federal grants, 6 weeks before due date for Foundation grants to hone idea and identify or confirm funding opportunity
  • Providing DEG with Sponsor Guidelines if opportunity is already identified
  • Getting Project Proposal Form signed (requires approvals from Department, Division, Research Office and Academic Affairs) and documents commitments and cost shares (collaborate with DEG)
  • Creating a proposal specific submission plan (collaborate with DEG)
  • Writing the proposal narrative (with DEG and possibly a grantwriter)
  • Meeting with Director of Academic Budgets & Resources for additional budget support (if needed)
  • Filling in the RISD budget spreadsheet (collaborate with DEG) or grant specific budget sheet
  • Drafting the Budget Justification (mostly federal grants)
  • Submitting budget (and justification if required) and providing all supporting documents specific to funding opportunity (biosketch, statement of work, conflict of interest, data management plan, letters of support, etc.) to DEG 10 days prior to submission
  • Signing off on final grants package including budget and narrative, after approval by Vice Provost and Director of Academic Budgets & Resources

Director of External Grants (DEG) is responsible for:

  • Assisting with Project Proposal Form process (requires approvals from Department, Division, Research Office and Academic Affairs) and documenting commitments and cost shares, if needed
  • Independently confirming all campus contributions and/or matches directly from contributors
  • Creating a proposal specific submission plan (collaborate with PI)
  • Circulating all relevant grant documents to internal grants team and uploading to folder in Shared Drive
  • All cover sheets, face pages and checklists required by grant, and any other documents required by sponsor (any binding documents must be signed by Sam Solomon, Jean Eddy or Rosanne Somerson.)
  • Providing subrecipient package if applicable (If RISD is a sub, provide lead institution with all required information and documentation specific to funding opportunity)
  • Collecting subrecipient documentation, if applicable (If RISD is lead institution, collect all required information and documentation from subs specific to funding opportunity)
  • Assisting with proposal narrative and budget development
  • Obtaining budget and Academic Affairs approval (Director of Academic Budgets & Resources and Vice Provost)
  • Reviewing application
  • Submitting proposal
